Black, White & Cute All Over!

Black, White & Cute All Over!
So, unless you’ve been on the other side of the world or near one of the poles…chances are you’ve notice that summer is in full swing. One trend that I did not count on liking for summer was the black & white trend. When I saw that the runway was littered with the color combo for summer 2013 I was more than skeptical. Summer is so bright and full of color (at least in my mind) that the neutral colors were underwhelming. However, I’ve started to come around. In the plus column: unlike the color blocking trend, you will never end up mismatching, black is forever slimming even though it does attract heat the most but white is the coolest color you can wear even though it tends to make people appear broader. Talk about a perfect balance! Therefore, this week’s fashion set is dedicated to BLACK & WHITE! I am particularly proud of this week’s fashion set because everything (except 1 thing) is UNDER $100. Don’t worry I’m not under any grand delusions that $100 isn’t a lot of money but if you’re willing to splurge then its not too bad of a price point.

Now, to begin with, the dress ($65) can be the centerpiece around which you can base the entire look; plus, since the black & white trend is so hot I’m sure there are lots of other options at various price points (this goes for all pieces). Anyhoo, the main suggestion I have is to NOT just wear a white dress. As I said before white makes anyone look bigger than they are, so try to make sure there are some black sections to accent your figure. Hats are huge during the summer trend-wise and size-wise: nothing says summertime like hiding your face from the sun with a wide brimmed hat! There’s no wrong way to dive into hats except to just wear one, just be ready for some hat hair. That’s why the beach is the perfect place for hats: there’s no chance of hat hair if you’re getting in and out of the water. The white & black straw hat ($27) adds some sophistication to the traditional floppy, straw hat. The fedora ($20) is perfect for everyday wear because of its simple shape and classic look. It can easily go from day to night.

What outfit is complete with a good bag? NONE!! The white & black crossbody satchel ($56) is perfect for the day: the white color will go with anything you put on, its big enough to put all the things you need for a day trip & small enough not to cause discomfort if you end up wearing it for a few hours. Side note: for destination summer vacations (& actually in general) I am an avid fan of leather and other materials that can be easily cleaned if they get spilled on or dirty. Same goes for the night time, ESPECIALLY for the night time. One spilt drink and your cute clutch is done. Dark colors help hide whatever might get spilled during a night out on the town. that said, the black mini bag with accented silver chain ($50) is a perfect addition to any outfit.

Yay, time to talk about shoes!!! So many options so many circumstances to take into consideration! For the daytime I think a thong sandal with a comfy sole is a summer must-have. Just remember that if you’re going to be outside for long periods of time that you will get the inevitable foot strap tan on your feet. So if you’re wearing a gladiator inspired shoe with multiple straps it will show up in your tan! The white thong sandal, with a little decoration/bling ($35) is a perfect fit! For a dressier, night time look I’d go with the black gladiator sandal…with some bling ($28)! Not only are they cute, but easy to move in and goes with everything. whether or not you want to add a bracelet or a few rings is up to you (black & white ring $48, black ring $148). seeing as the average summer temperature around here is in the mid-80s I try to wear as few things as possible. But don't be afraid to get bold in the jewelry department. Even though this can be a fun trend with crazy patterns its still black and white. Punch it up a little or else you might end up looking more like a nun than a fashionista!!

Spring Already?

Spring Already?

I'm not sure where you are right now my loyal readers, but here in HP there is a random warm snap. I'm not sure if the groundhog saw his shadow or not so I'm doubtful that the weather will remain this way for long.  i am so not complaining though!  After all this time of looking out the window and seeing frost and a gray sky, I finally have a need to take out my sunglasses. but i refuse to let this warm weather go to waste: activity & fashion-wise. I've already taken a walk around my block a few times to really soak up the sun & I did so in as vibrant of clothes as I could find. No heavy gray coat with dark jeans for this gal! That's not to say that I opted for pretty and uncomfortable just because it was a few degrees higher than usual. No way, have you met me?! Its okay to keep the pieces the same and simply change up the aesthetics. So keep the jeans, but punch it up with a brighter shade of color, like these cranberry skinny jeans. And why not wear some comfy sneakers? If you swap out those regular shoes for a wedge sneaker (which is very on trend right now/Spring) not only are you adding a bit more style, & height, but you're also elongating your legs. (AKA: it makes you look leaner and taller. Who doesn't want that?)  Throw on a neutral tank with some attitude and you're good to go. For those random chilly breezes that just can't seem to stop blowing in your direction, don't forget a jacket. If you really want to "taste the rainbow" try a color with some pop. And why not? There is no hard and fast rule that says that you can only wear one colorful piece of clothing at once. Think of it as your own personal take on color blocking. The look is youthful, fun and sure to get a few heads to turn!

Snowy Days

Snowy Days

Whenever the weather turns frigid, it never fails: people's fashion gets bleak and heavy. In other words, if a person's fashion sense doesn't reflect a dark color scheme with little to no color, then they cover themselves in layer upon layer of bulky clothing. Neither is necessary. You CAN be cute in cold weather. In fact I demand it! No excuses people. The best part about this outfit, and most of the ones I blog about is that they are easy and can be found in just about anyone's closet. And this is not like on tv when the host says its easy to put together (maybe with the help of an entire style team) and that everyone has this at home to put together (with a few hundred bucks). Granted, some of the items I gravitate towards are designer and the knock-off is going to throw the look, but dang it a girl's gotta have something to drool over! Items above, like the cable knit sweater and colorful skinny jeans are easy. Now the cape is the bit of whimsy that costs a little less than the new Vaio laptop I got a few months ago. But who amongst us don't have one or two semi-expensive pieces that we try like the dickens to work into outfits when the occasion calls for it (probably BECAUSE it was so expensive)! But i digress...long story short: staying warm does not automatically mean drab. Put a statement piece in there, brighten up your look, give the eye something to covet and ogle. Why not? Beats looking at snow, snow oh and some more even dirtier snow. And if you don't know where to start, then take a page from my look-book: you can keep it casual underneath your outerwear (so you're comfy once you get where you're going) an keep it cute and presentable for your adoring public by utilizing accessories. This way you're always dressed correct for the occasion!

Office Realness

Office Realness

Who says neutrals have to be boring?! Don't let the clothes outshine your usual effervescence. As I've said before: clothes, while awesome, should only ever be used to enhance the beauty that is already there. otherwise you're just hiding and doing yourself a great injustice. And hurting my eyes in the process! Not only is this outfit great for a casual Friday, its also sharp, fitted & easy to take from day to night. (Don't get me wrong: for a 'proper' Friday night out I'd go in a much..um...flirtatious. But for a few drinks and laughs out, this isn't bad. Getting off track...anyhoo...mixing neutrals can be just as fun as mixing patterns and textures. For this outfit each piece lends itself to another and ultimately ties the whole thing together. The creamy pink in the blazer hints to the sweater, which is broken up by a solid dark wash jean, etc, etc... Another thought, this outfit is picture ready. Ever afraid that the picture you take today will make you cringe a year or so from now? Well, neutrals, combined with a classic silhouette 'keeps it simple stupid.' Now, do me a favor: think back to a few years ago and now reflect on today's styles & trends. Ok, and  now project a few years into the future. Would you be embarrassed if you saw a picture of you in this outfit? That's what I thought. Not every outfit has to be bling-tastic, but if it makes you feel that way while not tormenting my eyes; why not?
