Weekend Cozyness

Weekend CozynessAnother week has flown by, and now its time to opt out of the heels and stiff work collar shirts, in slip into the jeans and comfy shoes! A cardigan/open sweater paired with jeans, and a simple long-sleeved shirt is an easy go to; especially in this schizophrenic weather. If its a bit chilly then the cardigan has you covered (literally!), but if the temperature climbs a little higher than expected its easy to take of the outer layer and stay sleek and comfy. A wooden necklace gives your look an earthy feel, and the flat boots with a fuzzy lining makes sure your feet get the weekend off too. A pop of color in the form of a belt and a bag really brings this outfit together. The best part is
you're set for the entire day. Shopping,
hanging with friends or a weekend date or
appointment.

Thanksgiving Fashion

Thanksgiving Fashion
The holiday season, the time for the three 'Fs': family, food, & fashion of course! I know that your uncles on your mom's side & your aunts on your dad's side might not appreciate a full-on runway show upstaging the turkey, but there's no reason to go frumpy. And I'm going to give you 3 good reasons as to why you should dress to impress!

1.There's always someone with a camera &/or camera phones just waiting to capture a touching family moment or tradition. And thanks to social media (facebook, twitter, instagram app, etc) these pictures are online and ready for judgement in a matter of seconds.

2. If you're one of those families who play flag football in the backyard or local park. You never know who you'll run into, but I'm sure that you don't want to look haggard and unkempt.

3. Because there is always a point in the day where you make some excuse to leave the house and get away from everyone else. When that happens, not only do you want to dress accordingly for the weather, but, again, for your public. Let's face it, it's when you look your worse that you run into people you wish you hadn't or at least looked better when you do run into them. So spare yourself all of this holiday anxiety, and enjoy your food and just dress up a bit. You'll find that you're more willing to tag those pictures, and less likely to report it as spam just to get them offline!

Weekend Chic

Weekend Chic
Made it through yet another week to the weekend? Congrats! But I'm sick of people using the weekend to get all frumpy on me. If you're staying in, that's one thing; but if you're going to hang out, do brunch, or anything else that involves going out in public or being around a nice handful of people, take some time to spruce yourself up. I'm from the school of thought that looking good doesn't have to take forever or mucho dinero. Here in the southeast, we're in for higher temperatures over the weekend. Don't trade in that sweater for a t-shirt just yet; just opt for a nice sweater and jeans rather than a heavy coat to venture outside. And instead of boots, why not flats? They are infinitely easier to slip on & off, and aren't as heavy. Don't get me wrong, I love boots, but they can lend themselves to looking more dressed up than you're willing to project over the weekend. Plus, most boots tend to have an unwanted heel (at least all of the ones that I've been looking at). Heels=dressy for me. Keep it casual with flats and a pair of sunglasses seeing as there is little chance of rain/inclement weather. Also, I love a good messenger bag for casual attire: not only is it hands-free, but the cross-body style gives a more youthful look. the bag alludes to school, and book bags all while housing a lot of storage without veering into hobo bag territory.

Prep for Fall

Prep for Fall
Don't put away those skirts just yet. I will admit that sometimes its just too cold to practically wear some of the things I imagine (no matter how thick the tights and socks, a skirt = a freezing, but stylishly dressed, woman. And who looks cute when their teeth are chattering and extremities are turning blue?!) But, with the weather's inability to decide whether its still summer, fall, or the dead of winter I figure there is still some wiggle room left in my wardrobe. My general style, if you haven't noticed, is conservative with some type of an edge or twist (I hope). So why not go Prep for Fall?! Key staple pieces: peacoat, but in a vibrant color. No grays or blacks, there's plenty of time for that when winter hits. The cable-knit sweater in a muted tone allows for the classically polka dotted skirt to speak volumes once the coat comes off. The tights or leggings are important. Don't feel the need to wear basic black. A patterned legging adds the Gossip Girl element, taking the outfit from nice to trendy. The accessories put a nice finish on the whole kit-and-caboodle. A nice high heeled bootie, dark pearl studs and a black quilted purse all add texture without overwhelming the eye. Altogether, and you've got a great outfit for...well...any occasion.

SteamPunk 4 Hallow's Eve?

SteamPunk 4 Hallow's Eve?
SciFi nerd + fashionista = my Hallow's Eve costume (you know, if I had the time, money and place to wear it). That does not stop me from concocting costumes for the awesome party I'm having in my mind! Allow me to introduce you to a genre called steampunk. A hodgepodge of styles/periods that  includes: Victorian, Industrial Revolution, American Western, Post-Apocalyptic with a bit of SciFi with a punk twist. Basically think of the characters from Firefly (SciFi series) and you've got Steampunk in a nutshell! My favorite trait about this style is that it can be sexy but comfortable but the girls are never portrayed as damsels but strong-willed, fighters. So this Hallow's Eve through away that 'sexy police woman' costume and be innovative in steampunk. No two steampunk costumes are the same so you're guaranteed to look one-of-a-kind :-)

Day 2 Nite

Day 2 NiteNo time to change before a nite out? No Problem: Day 2 nite in 3 accessories or less! Ok, I know that this is not THE party outfit for a well-deserved Friday or Saturday night out but it is do-able. I've seen those articles in magazines and on tv of fashion critics telling us 'regular people' how to go from day to night in just a few small changes to your outfit. well, i'm not sure about everyone else but it always seems that their day look was pretty close to what I would call a party outfit already. OR the 'few small changes' included expensive and unlikely items that I wouldn't possess due to                     Day 2 Nite by danettecj featuring long sleeve shirts
simple differences in taste.

So, my answer was to create a Day 2 Night look that was more likely to happen to me.
So bear with me. Its fall but still relatively warm for this time of year, at least in the
southeast where I live. So an over-sized sweatshirt, tights/leggings, some fuzzy
slippers and a hat if I wanted to venture outside (probably the backyard).  Now,
I don't know why this happens but it always does: I'll want to stay in & have a quiet night
in every once in a while and thats the time my friends will convince me to go out WITH
NO NOTICE AT ALL! Whether I'm hanging at a friend's place and am forced to go out or if people
just happen to show up and drag me out, there's never enough time to really change (& agonize for 30 minutes over what to wear). But there are a few accessory changes that can help you  blend in better
with the night-life.
1. a small black clutch with a bit of bling instantly makes nearly any outfit more night time appropriate
2. a long necklace dresses up the sweatshirt and draws attention to the jewelry while accenting the shirt
3. high heeled, knee-high boots brings some sex appeal to any outfit whereas ankle boots tend to look
chunky. There  you have it! Day to Night (realistically) in 3 accessory changes or less. Things that most
women have in their closet. Which means if you find yourself over at a friends house with little to no time
to get ready for a night on the town you can probably borrow most of these items from her!

Indian Summer

Indian Summer

If where you live is anything like where I live, then you are experiencing that final burst of summer weather. RELISH IT! Wear those shorts one last time before packing them up, never to be seen again until next summer. Play around with colors and thin layers that you can show off all day before that over-sized coat becomes the key piece around which the rest of your outfit revolves. Most importantly GO OUTSIDE! Fluorescent lighting does nothing for those clothes you spent sooo much money on buying and that outfit you spent sooo much time putting together. Nothing makes a wardrobe pop like the sun and natural surroundings.

Dreams of Color Blocking

Dreams of Color Blocking
Love the trend but afraid you can't pull it off? Then make it your own. Remember: fashion is supposed to be fun & expressive!!! One of the things that I love, LOVE, <3 about fall is the resurgence of the blinged-out accessories. Because, let's face it, when the temperature is nearly 90+ degrees the less touching your skin the better. Fall = more fashion/more layers (& hiding the lbs you put on over the summer)! So put plumb with a bright yellow, or mellow out the color blocking so it meets your comfort level like I did here. Have the colors, but perhaps in a darker shade and brighten the outfit with a few key accessories or a dramatic cape. And Above all WORK IT! Confidence is not an accessory but a must-have staple for any outfit ;-)
